Elba Leon is one of the premier artists from San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca. She comes from a family of generations of artists and started working at the age of 10. Early in her development as an artist, she began focusing on the nature around her and incorporates many of these beauties in her pieces. Common themes include butterflies, flowers or fish. She also tries to create unique pieces that are unlike any others from San Bartolo. As the clay is drying, she uses tools to etch in designs or cut outs. She also creates a signature collection of 7 female figures representing each of the regions of Oaxaca. Her amazingly detailed figures and pots in the black pottery style have earned her fantastic recognition. Her work continuously wins national competitions.
