Gabino Reyes is one of the finest carvers in La Unión, Oaxaca. La Unión is a village where the biggest priority is agriculture. Many of the farmers carve as a way to pass time and as a result, most of the work that comes from this area is quite naive. On the other hand, Gabino, who started carving at a very young age has a rare talent. He spent hours as a child daydreaming about how creatures in the field could be transformed into works of art. He is also influenced by the surrounding vegetation which is largely dry with lots of varieties of cactus which he also incorporates into his work. His attention to detail is unsurpassed and often includes images of the Virgen de Guadalupe embedded into his pieces.
