Raymundo Gonzalez exclusively at COSAS for Second Saturday in November.

An exhibition of Raymundo Gonzalez paintings created exclusively for COSAS will be on display during November and December. Raymundo will join us from his home in Cuernevaca during our opening reception, November 12 from 4-8pm. His work will be on display through December. Raymundo paints and draws what he sees; a mix of Spanish and Indian cultures, fiestas, traditions, myths and colors. His work captures these experiences magnificently, giving the viewer both a taste of reality and fantasy. Trained as an architect and influenced by artists such as Goya, Picasso and Diego Rivera, Raymundo Gonzalez is reknowned throughout Latin America for his distinctive style of painting that captures the color, spirituality, and vibrancy of Mexican life and culture. His work is filled with his knowledge of structure, and he uses architectural features such as walls, roofs, towers and ladders to bring balance to the paintings which are bright, colorful magical depictions of everyday life in Mexico blended on occassion with statements about democracy and politics.

COSAS is thrilled to have the opportunity to have Raymundo with us in a rare visit to the US to introduce some of his new work.

Day of the Dead all of October featuring Nancy Graham's "Muertos" paintings and fused fabric works.

COSAS will feature Dia de los Muertos all of October. Our annual altar will be dedicated to Oaxacan artist Dolores Porras who passed in November 2010. Nancy Graham will be our featured artist during our Second Saturday Art & Wine opening reception on October 8 from 4-8pm. Her work will be on display until November 5. Nancy is a recognized and multi-faceted artist. Her spectrum of work includes a variety of mediums including watercolor, oil and fused fabric. Her paintings and fabric pieces demonstrate a devoted attention to exacting detail and outstanding technical ability. Her subject matter ranges from photo-realistic images of classic cars, to cowboys, horses, ranch life and storybook characters. She created a life size “Day of the Dead” cow for the San Antonio Cow Parade which was a stepping off point for a series of paintings and fused fabric pieces celebrating Dia de los Muertos. Many of these pieces will be featured in our October show.

Photography by Mexican artist Xill Fessenden will be featured as part of Fotoseptiembre USA.

Xill Fessenden is a photographic artist with a long trajectory of image making. In the early 70’s she studied photography and art at the Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore with master photographers such as Minor White and Imogene Cunningham, as well as the critic A.D. Coleman. Xill has lived in Mexico since 1985, exhibiting in museums in Mexico City, Guadalajara, Morelia, Tepic and Colima. The body of work that she will present at COSAS during Fotoseptiembre, reflects a deep, enduring relationship with the indigenous communities of Mexico. Xill’s work will be very much at home among all of the other Mexican artists represented by COSAS. This will be her first exhibit in Texas. Her exhibition, El Corazon de Mexico, will also include placing her images in the open air, using the natural “ambiances” as an environmental context. Join us, and meet Xill during the opening reception of this exciting exhibit on September 10 from 4-8pm.
