David Marsh furniture is uniquely designed using sustainable pine and reclaimed wood. Each piece is hand crafted by David and his fellow craftsmen in his Texas studio. The distinctly “Marsh style” includes hand painting, a wide use of handmade stamps and rollers and as many as 4 coats of planet friendly water based lacquer. This furniture durable, as fun as it is beautiful and is meant to be lived with. David plays with designs that use things such as brightly painted and cut up broomsticks; basura (or garbage) better referred to as scrap slats that are either painted or stained. These elements are often combined with hand planed table and cabinet tops that have a “touch” and look of their own. Many of the more playful pieces incorporate marbles and tacks inlaid into the wood. There is great pride of design ownership among David and his co-craftsmen. Everyone who touches a piece in the making signs the back as their signature. And, whimsical and planet friendly messages remind both the artisans and purchasers that life is meant to be joyous on our fragile planet.

The village of Ocumicho is famous for its clay work and use of devils and Christian lore combined with ancient Purepecha beliefs. One of the most famous artists in Octavio Reyes. Known for his large naïve clay figures, Octavio is unique. He is also known for his imaginative masks in both clay and wood; and his other brightly colored whimsical and humorous pieces. He is truly one of a kind.

Arnulfo Vasquez

Arnulfo is son to the famous Salvador Vasquez. He has worked under the supervision of his father since he was a young boy. Today, Arnulfo is considered one of the important artists working in Tonala. He is one of the leaders in the preservation of the traditional Barro Bruñido craft and is well respected among his peers. His work is recognized in competitions around the country.

Antonio is one of the most creative of the famous Catrina artists in Capula. He uses his imagination to create Catrinas adorned with turtles, butterflies, bird cages full of birds, spiders and other creatures. His sense of humor and playful expression of Day of the Dead themes come out in all of his work. Antonio is a humble man and his work and young family bring him great joy.

Ruth Cortes

Ruth Cortes lives in San Miguel de Allende and is know for her masterful silversmith work. She works in both Sterling Silver and Alpaca or Nickel Silver. Her work is meticulous in her detail and quality. Pieces often are adorned with milagros. Her work includes all types of jewelry and pendants; jewelry boxes and unique earring holders, napkin rings, concha belts, purses, picture frames, and much more.

Ramon’s workshop is located just north of San Miguel de Allende. His technique incorporates beautifully carved wood with handsomely decorated painting to make his gorgeous work. Pieces include Saints, Nichos, Retablos, hand painted panels, canvases and much more. His unique painting style uses a layering to create a beautiful and often gold leaf antique look. His work can be found in shops, homes and restaurants around the world.

Moises Rodriguez

Moises comes from Tonala outside of Guadalajara. As one 5 of Salvador Vasquez apprentices, Moises learned the technique of Barro Bruñido from one of the “Great Masters.” Moises has adapted this technique into his own unique creations often applying beautiful pieces of adorned and burnished clay to hand painted wood; creating retablos, boxes and other types of crafts. He has become very interested in preserving some of Tonala’s figurative work from the early 1920s and often uses depictions of some of these wonderfully naïve characters and village scenes in his work.

Hilario Alejas

Hilario began working with clay next to his mother at the age of 15. He is best known for his brightly green glazed ornamental pineapples and elaborate figures. His technique is recognized through his use of appliqué and openwork, whose production requires exceptional skill and mastery. Hilario is one of Mexico’s Great Masters of Mexican Folk Art, and has earned many awards, including the Premio Fomento Cultural Banamex. Each day he works in his studio in San Jose de Gracia developing new forms and designs and now employs yellow and blue glazes as well.

Guadalupe Ramirez

Guadalupe learned his craft from his father near the city of Queretero. His intricate retablos are sought after and can be found in numerous homes, restaurants and hotels throughout Mexico and the US. Each saint is hand carved and assembled on a larger framed piece of wood. Mirrors and other objects are added. Then the pieces are painted either in bright colors or more antique tones. He is truly the best of all retablo carvers in Mexico.

Jacobo & Maria Angeles

In Oaxaca, some of the finest wood carvings are being created; and some of the best artisans are husband and wife team, Jocobo and Maria Angeles. Jocobo personally selects the wood from the copal trees which he carves into wondrous animals – large and small. The fabulously detailed painting is done by Maria and some of the pieces can take weeks to complete. Many of the designs are inspired by the Zapotec imagery of old and the famous Mata Ortiz pottery.
