Neftali Ayungua Suarez is one of the Great Masters of Mexican Folk Art. He uses molds of baked clay and plaster that he makes himself as a starting point of his elaborately decorated pieces. The clay comes from nearby mines and is carried out by burro. Neftali’s work uses diverse burnishing tools and a glazing pitch that contains lead and copper from Monterrey. The first firing of his treasures covers the piece completely. During the second firing he adds hand painted detail – his signature cross hatch strokes, and beautiful green glazing. Pieces are fired over an open brick kiln at 900 degrees centigrade.
Neftali has participated in over 80 competitions and has walked away with a significant number of special awards and honorable mentions
