In Oaxaca, some of the finest wood carvings are being created; and some of the best artisans are husband and wife team, Jocobo and Maria Angeles. Jocobo personally selects the wood from the copal trees which he carves into wondrous animals – large and small. The fabulously detailed painting is done by Maria and some of the pieces can take weeks to complete. Many of the designs are inspired by the Zapotec imagery of old and the famous Mata Ortiz pottery.
